There&#8217;s a tangible link between the way we behave and the men and women we have friendships with. And yet we&#8217;re likely to have presumed this commonality concerned our likes and dislikes &#8211; for example we enjoy the same musical tastes as our friends, or hold similar political views.</p>
<p>However, it now seems that we also have weight challenges in common with those we associate with. The amount we eat is closely related to how much our best friends eat. An interesting study looking at how young people eat found that oversized children eat more when in the company of other oversized friends.</p>
<p>Indeed, all the young people studied (aged 9 to 15) ate more when they were with friends than strangers regardless of their size. But the greatest calorific intakes were observed when overweight chums snacked together. The results of this study revealed several key factors. It found that friends have a key function where consumption is concerned.</p>
<p>Frankly, having more relaxed habits when with friends is not a big surprise. Adults would no doubt have demonstrated the same characteristics. It&#8217;s possible however that in addition, we assume friends will give their consent. We&#8217;re inclined to unconsciously monitor our behaviour in relation to their reaction to it.</p>
<p>Young people of all sizes were studied for forty five minutes. A number were teamed up with strangers, and a number with friends. Each pair had a mix of healthy and snack-type food, and entertainment.</p>
<p>The familiar couples put away more food than the unfamiliar ones. But overweight friends ate the most of all. Below is an illustration of what was consumed.</p>
<p>An average of seven hundred and thirty eight calories was eaten by overweight teens who paired with a friend. But the overweight youngsters with slimmer friends ate nearly three hundred calories less. The slimmer ones ate a fairly stable five hundred calories whatever the size of their friends. This ties in with the commonly held view that in early teens many kids&#8217; decisions to smoke or drink alcohol are strongly influenced by what their friends do.</p>
<p>The research team looking at food consumption had to conclude that peers played an influential role in a young person&#8217;s dietary habits. This sounds very negative, but of course it means that if youngsters were to associate more with friends who eat a balanced diet, then they too are likely to adjust their habits over time. A lot of people don&#8217;t keep up with modern research, for instance: Many of us feel guilty eating food between our meals because we&#8217;ve always been told that&#8217;s what puts on the weight. Is that actually the case?</p>
<p>The purists would have us believe that sticking to three nutritious meals a day is the way to drop the pounds. Today however we&#8217;re being told to increase that number if we want long-term weight reduction. Can this be right?</p>
<p>We would think more regular eating would mean weight gain, not loss. When we get that feeling of hunger between meals, we feel as though the pounds are falling off! Essentially though there&#8217;s more to it than that.</p>
<p>Our desire for food increases the longer we don&#8217;t eat. This means that when it does come round to meal time, our appetite is much bigger than normal. This can result in greater consumption than is good for us. This predominantly occurs with our last meal of the day. Then we end up with more food in our stomach at completely the wrong time &#8211; shortly before we go to bed!</p>
<p>If instead we altered our day and prepared six small &#8216;meals&#8217;, that hungry feeling never develops. Such frequent ingestion is recognised by the body. It starts to trust that it&#8217;s getting what it needs when it needs it, and so can allocate the right resources to the right areas.</p>
<p>The body hangs on to fat when it doesn&#8217;t get regular food, and allows it to build up around areas such as the waistline. So we end up keeping the weight on even though we go through long periods without any food!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s much easier to get more calories sooner (without over-eating) if we have small frequent meals. Then there&#8217;s much more chance the food will be processed efficiently, and not left to add to our weight. It is also much harder to keep a check on what we eat when we start a meal feeling famished.</p>
<p>Salads and &#8216;light choice&#8217; options just do not cut it! We want stodgy carbo-loading food such as breads and pastas. These are fine for the quick hit to satisfy, but are not going to help with a weight loss program. In summation, the most comfortable and effective way to lose weight is to eat little and often.</p>

We have weight management problems if our figure is any higher than that. A BMI of more than 30 is considered obese. It becomes morbidly obese when the index goes over 40.</p>
<p>To work out your own index &#8211; Use a metric rule to measure your height. Then record your weight in kilograms. Your height should be multiplied by itself, then divide that figure by your weight.</p>
<p>For example if your height is 1.6 metres and your weight is 78 kilos, your BMI is 30.47 (1.6 x 1.6 = 2.56 then 78 / 2.56 = 30.47). As a BMI of more than thirty has been classified as obese, action would definitely be required in the above example.</p>
<p>If we persist with eating fatty and sugary calorie-laden food, we&#8217;ll never get a grip on our weight management. We can lower our fat reserves (and therefore our weight) if we trim down our portion sizes and stick to more natural foodstuffs.</p>
<p>You should avoid crash diets which usually end up with you either feeling ill or giving up in desperation. Crash diets are those that limit your intake to below a thousand calories for women and fifteen hundred calories for men. Programs like this tend to have a yo-yo effect on weight &#8211; it comes off quickly, then goes straight back on again when you inevitably stop.</p>
<p>Long-term weight reduction takes time. But if you just knocked 500 cals off your current daily intake, the results would start to show over time. So not the un-realistic promises fed to you from the instant remedy brigade, but a real solution to help you stay out of the danger zones.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s well understood that foods saturated in fat contain the highest calories. Therefore keeping fat to a minimum will significantly reduce your calories. Substitute fat with whole grains, vegetables and fruit. It&#8217;s amazing how quickly you&#8217;ll start to notice improvements in your health.</p>
<p>It may seem like a good idea to skip a meal, but it isn&#8217;t. Over the day as a whole, you&#8217;re likely to consume more in snacks to compensate for your hunger. On the contrary, you should eat several small meals a day to prevent getting too hungry. On-going hunger essentially slows the weight loss process down. Regular, healthy eating allows your body to metabolise more efficiently, which makes weight loss much easier.</p>

So we have the victorious and the victimized &#8211; and they can generally be differentiated by their attitudes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s essential when working on a weight loss program to adopt the habits of the victor to accomplish the right outcome. Feebly attempting a weight-loss plan without taking responsibility for the outcome will put you in the &#8216;victim&#8217; camp. And yet for a victor it&#8217;s all in the bag from the beginning.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s envision we&#8217;re on court for a tennis finale. We listen to the players before the start &#8211; One player says the outcome is now in the lap of the gods, whereas his opponent states &#8220;I am destined to be the champion!&#8221; Who&#8217;s most likely to succeed?</p>
<p>&#8216;Oar&#8217; can be used to describe a victor who paddles his way to the winning post. O is for ownership, A is for accountability and R is for responsibility. We can define the victim by the word BED (Blame, Excuses and Denial) &#8211; a person who stays in bed and gives up.</p>
<p>The victor doesn&#8217;t expect someone else to lead the way &#8211; and takes ownership of his or her tasks. He&#8217;s accountable for his actions, and so takes them seriously, seeing things through by tackling problems not creating them. He takes responsibility for the consequences of his actions, and doesn&#8217;t allow himself to make excuses.</p>
<p>The victim always has a reason for not achieving, and it&#8217;s rarely to do with him or herself. Slip-ups and blunders are never down to him; he assumes no control and so no responsibility. He makes excuses for under-performing, not realising the only person he&#8217;s convincing is himself. After repeating this cycle of excuses and blame for a while, the victim is in denial. He&#8217;s absolutely convinced that there isn&#8217;t anything he can do to change things.</p>
<p>To stack the odds in their favour, a mental work-out may be needed for some dieters approaching a life-changing eating program. Adopting the victim&#8217;s outlook will prevent a person from controlling the outcome.</p>
<p>Continual positive repetition will change a victim&#8217;s attitude to that of a victor. Pay attention to what you&#8217;re saying to yourself &#8211; if you sound like a victim, then stop dead! Instead, mentally verbalize why you can be successful. Nobody else is superior to you &#8211; some have just conquered their victimization thinking and achieved their success.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no such thing as a hero, only those who rise to the occasion&#8221;. Those were the words of Winston Churchill, and they&#8217;re just as valid today. We have to have the mind-set of a winner in order to achieve the weight we want ourselves to be.</p>

We may visualize great trips away, having a large family home, a luxury car and perhaps a well respected position. It&#8217;s probable we&#8217;ll view our figure differently &#8211; with less body fat and a more toned physique.</p>
<p>Honing in on the new things we want to have is a good starting base when thinking of which goals we want to reach. If we don&#8217;t have an idea of how things will be when we&#8217;ve made it, the chances are we&#8217;ll never get there.</p>
<p>And yet before we can have the things we want, some changes must be made. The great Albert Einstein was quoted as saying that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing and expect a different result! And so, continue doing what you&#8217;re doing right now, and you&#8217;ll continue having what you&#8217;ve always had.</p>
<p>To have significantly more, we must change the way we think as well as the way we do things. Knowing that there&#8217;s going to be a deal of exertion to do to get the things we want to have isn&#8217;t a great revelation. That we have to give in order to be given is a fundamental law of life. But the rewards we want won&#8217;t just turn up purely from doing the work.</p>
<p>People who achieve much in life internalize winning attitudes along the way. They adopt the right behaviour and thought processes. So the individual who&#8217;s goal is to lose 30 pounds in the next 12 months has to become conscientious about nutrition and prioritise a certain amount of time to exercise each week.</p>
<p>Hanging out with friends comes after the work-out&#8217;s been completed. Success dictates that reward will follow effort. Results come all the sooner when slimming and good health are pursued with enthusiasm.</p>
<p>Winning isn&#8217;t a matter of chance. Maintaining a solid approach is an essential foundation to guard against the doubts and criticisms we may have to endure.</p>
<p>Associating with successful thinkers helps. We can do this by reading biographies and watching interviews of others who&#8217;ve emerged victorious after conquering their difficulties. The same message runs through each &#8211; that what they&#8217;ve achieved can mainly be attributed to the person they became and the work they did before the money started to come in. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Both my wife Katie and I were desperate to reduce our weight, so we had a little heart to heart about why we wanted to be thinner, and what that would mean to us. Our little tete-a-tete revealed a rather basic wish-list. As far as my wife was concerned, she wanted more get-up-and-go when the kids wanted to do things. Also, she wanted to feel more confident revealing herself to me.</p>
<p>Predominantly for me it was about buying stylish off-the-peg clothes again, instead of the dreary aging ranges available for &#8216;over size&#8217; people. Oh, and I also REALLY wanted to get to the third floor of our house without gasping for breath!</p>
<p>Going through this process revealed that how we perceive ourselves is a key factor in how we actually look. Those of us who are obese tend to have a very low self-image. It&#8217;s a popular assumption that reducing weight will make everything in life good again. I want you to know how much I understand this thought process. Here are some observations&#8230;</p>
<p>Psychologists understand that we have a subconscious mind, which doesn&#8217;t recognise the difference between a real thing and an imaginary thing. And therefore our subconscious transfers its most vividly perceived information into our conscious &#8211; imaginary or otherwise! Repeat a concept often enough and that surfaces as the overriding idea.</p>
<p>Mull that thought over for a moment. The chances are you&#8217;ve been repeatedly telling yourself that you&#8217;re too large. Our subconscious needs to be fed a diet of what we actually want to be real.</p>
<p>We must always be focused on the prizes of losing weight, not the price. So between us, we came up with a number of things that we knew would be better once we&#8217;d lost the weight &#8211; Things like having fun with the kids, cycling, more confidence, poise, going for long walks, dancing and playing tennis.</p>
<p>Next we conjured up visions of ourselves on vacation, looking fantastic in our new summer gear. We got the respect and esteem of people as we confidently mingled with others. Life became a breeze.</p>

<p>Just How Much of a Problem Is There Then? Maybe you&#8217;re not classed as obese, but you&#8217;re probably somewhat overweight if you&#8217;re reading this. Amazingly, over two-thirds of the US populace are classed as needing weight loss. Put another way, that&#8217;s 210 millions!</p>
<p>Other countries are catching up fast too&#8230; Yet we don&#8217;t wish to win this race&#8230;</p>
<p>Take the United Kingdom &#8211; nearly a quarter of all adults are considered obese. But look at this &#8211; By 2050 the obesity level could be ninety per cent!</p>
<p>Are those figures really set in concrete? No-one wants this trend to continue. Proper eating programs are required reading; ignore all the hype from diet pill manufacturers.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a well known fact that obesity can lead to many major problems &#8211; Type two diabetes; mental health problems; high blood pressure; heart disease and heart failure; cancer; liver disease; osteoarthritis and high cholesterol.</p>

<p>Our article is not meant to upset or confuse you even more; that would be wrong. We want to help you break free from the chains of obesity, and start living again.</p>
<p>We know there are lots of different explanations for obesity, but in reality most of them are not our fault. Enough of looking back though. The time has come for re-education. We&#8217;re not trapped into a lifetime of obesity.</p>
<p>Look at it like this; can a motor repairer fix a Mercedes with Fiat tools? They&#8217;re not equipped for the job at all. The mechanic can&#8217;t possibly fulfil his task with the wrong set of tools.</p>
<p>Having the appropriate tools for the job in hand is vital. The mechanic will understand the basics of what he&#8217;s supposed to do, but his tools will let him down.</p>
<p>And so it is with weight reduction. And so we are seeking to volunteer the right tools to fix your challenge for good. To be honest, none of us are the same. We like it to be that way. What works for one doesn&#8217;t always work for another.</p>
