Four Health Tips for College Students
Maintaining your health during your college years could be very important to your overall success as a student. In case you have not given much thought about the challenge of being healthy and fit while at college, then take a look at the four simple health tips that I outline in the following paragraphs.
1. Exercise Regularly. Hitting the books and staying in a small room with eyes fixed on your computer all the time could lead to illness in the long or even the short run. Balance your study with regular exercise by choosing some sport or other active pursuit that is enjoyable to you. In college you can visit the gym or fitness centers that are available on most campuses or take part in a sports program. If you are not the athletic type, then get your exercise by jogging, bicycling or even just by walking. Exercising on a regular basis will keep you healthy not only in college, but throughout your life.
2. Follow a Balanced Diet. Your new college environment and routine offers you a lot of freedom even when it comes to selecting your food. The easy way is to eat a lot of fast food and snacks, but this kind of diet can also lead to illness or impaired physical ability later on in the semester. If you are serious about watching your health, then opt for a balanced diet with three square meals a day, and make a good effort to start each day with a healthy breakfast. This kind of diet will help you to be physically fit and mentally alert. It is an often overlooked factor in achieving academic excellence.
3. Get Proper Sleep. You have heard of college students doing “all nighters,” taking coffee and other stimulants to study deep into the night. Well, that kind of routine can work once in a while but it is extremely unhealthy if it becomes a habit. When your body tells you that it is tired you should heed the signals and go to bed. If you need to gain some extra study time, then a better way to do it is to go to sleep early and get up and study in the wee hours of the morning when it is very quiet and your mind is fresh. Similarly, late night partying is good once in a while but not very healthy when done continually. So, be sensible about study, recreation and sleep and balance your activities so that you remain physically fit and mentally alert.
4. Avoid damaging substances. When you are at college you will have more freedom, but that freedom must be used wisely. One of the biggest challenges for a young adult is whether to use or avoid substances that are not healthy. Tobacco and alcohol may be legal (if you are of the right age) but they will not help you stay fit and healthy. You are investing a lot by going to college, so think about that investment and use your best discretion when it comes to taking substances that you know are not healthy.
Staying healthy while you are in college is not “rocket science” and if you pay attention to the four health tips mentioned above you will be able to get the most out of your college years.
